Thursday 11th June, 8.15pm

As part of the 2009 Next Stage Season STC will continue to present series of informal discussions between the cast and audience after the show in the Wharf 2 foyer. The aim is to give Next Stage audiences the chance to get more insight into the performance, with access to the actors, writer, director and production team. It is also an opportunity to profile the support of sponsor UBS who have supported  Wharf 2 development since 2004.

2009 Next Stage

In 2009, Sydney Theatre Company's artform development arm will be moving into the next stage with our new and appropriately named Next Stage program. Intended to give emerging artists, smaller companies and experimental work a platform, we see this program as an opportunity for theatre makers to take their artform to the next stage.

The Next Stage Season will be an eclectic one, comprising three full shows and a series of presentations of work in development. We've joined forces with the development arm of Bell Shakespeare, Mind's Eye, to present a Sydney season of Venus & Adonis, Griffin Theatre Company to present Ross Mueller's stunning new play Concussion and ThinIce from Perth to bring you The Duel. Tickets are now available for these productions.

Throughout the year Next Stage will invite a group of artists to participate in our inaugural season of Rough Drafts. These week-long creative developments will give theatre makers the opportunity to experiment: to try out new ideas, new ways of working and new collaborations. There will be an opportunity for you to attend a free, one-off showing at the conclusion of each week-long development. If you wish to join us at these showings, visit this website regularly throughout 2009, sign up for our email newsletter or become our friend on Facebook.

"(Next Stage) is a truly magnificent opportunity for artists to explore ideas, and create work in an alternative venue with a high level of production support for which the Sydney Theatre Company should be applauded." australianstage.com.au

Venus & Adonis

Shakespeare’s Venus & Adonis is a subversive re-working of Ovid’s original love story. Unlike its model, it celebrates the most human aspects of seduction: it is vulgar, funny, sexy and whole-hearted.

Concussion

A comedy with attitude, Ross Mueller’s Concussion was developed through the 2008 National Play Festival.  FINAL WEEK!

The Duel

The Duel forensically examines a single chapter from Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, digging deep into Zosima’s journey and the mysterious visitor who challenges him with a dark secret.

Opened 05 Jun 09 | Closed 20 Jun 09

Rough Draft #2

Our second Rough Draft of 2009 is the brain child of director Tanya Goldberg. From television to Twitter, from the water cooler to the playground, from the horse’s mouth to the cyber grapevine, this work will explore the distortions and permissive practices of contemporary Australian sexual culture.

Opened 08 Aug 09 | Closed 08 Aug 09

Rough Draft #3

The penultimate Rough Draft of 2009 is inspired by the cross-Sydney night time expedition taken earlier this month by playwright Tommy Murphy and director Simon Stone.

Opened 05 Sep 09 | Closed 05 Sep 09

Rough Draft #4

In the final Rough Draft of the year, Rochelle Whyte, Willoh S. Weiland, Mikaela Martin and Darrin Verhagen gleefully contemplate deadly revenge when they explore a series of dark and arresting stories connected to that theme.

Opened 12 Dec 09 | Closed 12 Dec 09
