IN THE IMAGE OF GOD HE CREATED HIM; MALE AND FEMALE HE CREATED THEM. GENESIS 1:27

FROM THE BEGINNINGS OF MODERN EUROPEAN THEATRE – STORIES OF THE BEGINNING, AT THE BEGINNING OF A NEW GROUP OF THEATRE MAKERS.

In the spirit of the mediaeval Mystery plays, a team of Australian writers and directors present the stories from the big dawn; the Creation, the Fall, the Expulsion from Eden, Cain and Abel, Noah’s Ark. And in the spirit of the original mystery plays which were performed in market places or the naves of churches, these stories are acted on small stages and strange environments in the cavernous shadows of CarriageWorks, the beautiful converted rail workshops at Eveleigh. Audiences will be able to promenade through the space and fi nd their own vantage point, playing the role of the people.

In 2009 the STC Actors Company leave us, and a completely new team arrives: The Residents – a troupe of performers working across all aspects of the Company. The Mysteries: Genesis will be the launch of this new-model ensemble and their only appearance in the Main Stage Season for the year.

Creation out of chaos, chaos out of paradise, grace within chaos, pride, confusion, and a simple offering of hope. Not the full cycle of Mystery plays; just a beginning…

Cate & Andrew say...

In days of yore these events took over the whole town. Join us and The Residents in taking over Bay 17 at CarriageWorks. This celebration of beginnings will be an adventure. Not back in time but back to  Theatrical Essentials: an engaged audience, a great story, a group of actors, some simple tricks. Fiat Lux.
