ACCIDENTAL DEATH OF AN ANARCHIST
by Dario Fo
Adapted by Alan Cumming and Tim Supple
‘You make statements to the press that ‘naturally’ there are no transcripts of the anarchist’s interrogation, yet a short while later, like a miracle, out come not none, but two or three transcripts, signed by the anarchist. From the grave no doubt. Who will believe a word you say now? Well, the Judge will… but apart from him. Who will believe a word you say now?’
Drawing heavily on elements of Commedia Dell’Arte, Stefo Nantsou’s (Zeal Theatre) production of Dario Fo’s brilliant political play will be a swirling, thunderous theatrical mayhem. Combining improvisation, lazzi and slapstick with Australian larrikin humour, this staging will reveal how the techniques of the traditional Italian Commedia have influenced modern drama and can shape a contemporary staging.
Accidental Death of an Anarchist explores institutional corruption through hilarious farce. An anarchist has fallen – or perhaps he has jumped – to his death whilst in police custody. The policemen responsible have nothing but ‘kindergarten logic’ with which to defend their position to their interrogator: a madman posing as a representative of the High Court. Logic and reason are twisted around, flipped over and turned inside out, as Fo uses irony to reveal the insanity of the policemen’s protestations of innocence.
This will be the first production for STC's The Residents, our newpermanent acting ensemble.
