In 2009, Sydney Theatre Company welcomes you Back Stage with our appropriately named Back Stage program which includes play readings, ‘meet the artist’ forums, pre-show briefings and back stage tours.
On Wednesday 30 September at 6.30pm, we invite you to join us for a special free event in celebration of a series of creative developments and workshops that have taken place at the Company through August and September.
In July Literary Manager Polly Rowe, offered Tahli Corin, Nick Coyle, Emily Calder and Mark Grentall, Phil Spencer and Scarlet McGynn, Post Presents and Kate Mulvany a period of access to an STC rehearsal space, three members of The Residents and a dramaturge. These playwrights and directors were invited to develop whatever they were working on at the moment, to workshop a new idea or to experiment with a new theatre making process.
What followed was a creative frenzy that was something akin to an extended Rough Draft. The three Residents - Alice Ansara, Sophie Ross and Zindzi Okenyo - shared their impressive acting talents, dramaturgical nous and wild theatrical imaginations with this wide range of playwrights and theatre makers. Alongside their work on other artists projects, these members of The Residents also began to create their own original work in a brand new form: verbatim cabaret!
Now (and inkeeping with the spirit of Rough Drafts) we would like to invite you to join us for guided tour of the development workshops embarked on and a sneak peak at snippets of these works in progress. The presentation, to be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 September in Wharf 2, will give you a unique opportunity to find out what goes on in a creative development and a glimpse into the theatre making processes of these up-and-coming young artists.
Tickets are free but we do recommend booking in advance by calling the STC Box Office on (02) 9250 1777 or
