STCinema returns to Sydney Theatre this July when Sydney Theatre Company presents a screening of the Norwegian film that inspired the stage adaptation of Elling.
Based on Ingvar Ambjørnsen’s bestseller Brødre i blodet (Blood Brothers), the film version of Elling was directed by Petter Naess who had previously directed the play in Oslo. Per Christian Ellefsen and Sven Nordin, who originated the roles of Elling and Kjell Bjarne on stage reprised their roles for the film. Hugely popular in Norway, Scandinavia and Europe, Elling won many awards at various international film festivals and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2002 Academy Awards.
Simon Bent’s adaptation of Elling was first performed at London’s Bush Theatre in 2007 and, due to its huge success, went on to transfer to Trafalgar Studios in the West End. The Sydney Theatre Company production of Elling, directed by Pamela Rabe, is currently playing in Wharf 1 and will undertake a NSW tour, travelling to venues in Parramatta, Canberra, Newcastle, Belrose (Glen Street Theatre) and Wollongong.
Directly following the screening of Elling, there will be a panel discussion.
