Theatre has always been at the centre of social thought,
discussion and change. At Sydney Theatre Company we develop
current, vibrant Australian stories through our Theatre In
Communities projects, celebrating diversity and facilitating new
connections within and outside the community with which we
work.
In 2013, STC is partnering with NRMA Motoring and Services to
create a unique piece of theatre with social impact. Produced with
the objective of raising road safety awareness amongst young people
in regional NSW,Road Trainwill be written and directed by STC
Resident Director (Community) Stefo Nantsou and developed in
consultation with NRMA policy and education staff, STC creative
talent and regional community groups. Road Train will be touring to
schools and community halls in Lismore, Casino, Canberra, Maitland,
Cessnock, Bathurst, Campbelltown, Wollongong, Parramatta and Sydney
in 2013.
Our work with Bankstown Youth Development Service (BYDS)
combines artistic, education and social engagement priorities.
Building upon the successes of past projects including People of
the Soil and Leviathan, in 2013, we will further exploreLook The
Other Way, a broader examination of youth and violence in Sydney's
Western Suburbs, performed by a mix of both professional STC actors
and members of the local community.
Our Theatre in Communities work is made possible through the
generous support of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation.
"What [made] the play so special for me was [that] all the
ideas came from our classroom…and the fact that we're all born in
Bankstown, like, we made the show and saw the show in Bankstown, it
was all about us."
