Next Stage 2009

Next Stage 2009

In 2009, Sydney Theatre Company's artform development arm will be moving into the next stage with our new and appropriately named Next Stage program. Intended to give emerging artists, smaller companies and experimental work a platform, we see this program as an opportunity for theatre makers to take their artform to the next stage.

The Next Stage Season will be an eclectic one, comprising three full shows and a series of presentations of work in development. We've joined forces with the development arm of Bell Shakespeare, Mind's Eye, to present a Sydney season of Venus & Adonis, Griffin Theatre Company to present Ross Mueller's stunning new play Concussion and ThinIce from Perth to bring you The Duel. Tickets are now available for these productions.

Throughout the year Next Stage will invite a group of artists to parcipate in our inaugural season of Rough Drafts. These week-long creative developments will give theatre makers the opportunity to experiment: to try out new ideas, new ways of working and new collaborations. There will be an opportunity for you to attend a free, one-off showing at the conclusion of each week-long development. If you wish to join us at these showings, visit this website regularly throughout 2009 or sign up for our email newsletter.

Venus & Adonis

Shakespeare’s Venus & Adonis is a subversive re-working of Ovid’s original love story. Unlike its model, it celebrates the most human aspects of seduction: it is vulgar, funny, sexy and whole-hearted.

Opens 11 Feb 09 | Tickets from $25.00

Concussion

Somewhere in a busy city, a Man wakes to discover he has forgotten his life. He has no memory of the past and no clear sense of the present. A comedy with attitude, Ross Mueller’s Concussion was developed through the 2008 National Play Festival.

Opens 13 Mar 09 | Tickets from $25.00

The Duel

In 1880 Dostoevsky wrote his final novel - The Brothers Karamazov. The Duel forensically examines a single chapter from The Brothers Karamazov, digging deep into Zosima’s journey and the mysterious visitor who challenges him with a dark secret.
