STC Young Playwrights' Residency
The STC Young Playwrights' Residency is designed to engage and develop young playwrights through a two and a half day workshop residency held at Sydney Theatre Company.
Background
Sydney Theatre Company’s Young Playwrights’ Award was established in 1992 and was one of the major playwriting competitions for young people in NSW and ACT. In recent years, two winners had their work presented in a staged reading, and received $1000 prize money. Thanks to the generosity of the donation of $40,000 from Ian Darling, STC Ed was able to expand the prize into a two and a half day residency for ten young playwrights.
In early October 2009, ten young playwrights from across NSW congregated at the wharf for the STC Ed Young Playwrights' Residency. Selected from over 50 applicants in both metropolitan and regional areas, these ten senior secondary students were invited to take part in the two and a half day residency lead by Literary Manager, Polly Rowe. Guest artists included Tommy Murphy, Alana Valentine and Tanya Goldberg.
Aim
The program aims to foster meaningful engagement of young playwrights with the Company and to invest in the process of creativity rather than the outcome.
