Theatre has always stimulated both visionary conversations and practical action. In this tradition, STC has committed to an ambitious, long-term and multifaceted environmental and social sustainability program that brings benefits to our Company, our environment and the communities in which we work.

In 2007 we launched our Greening The Wharf project to transform our beautiful, heritage-listed Wharf building into an inspirational example of environmental leadership. Completed in 2011, the award-winning project is widely considered to be an exemplar in its scale and comprehensive approach.

Our sustainability focus has been in the areas of energy, water, waste, Green Design (supply chain and theatre production). Some key initiatives implemented into the Wharf include:

Energy – 1,906 Suntech pluto solar panels sit on the Wharf roof providing solar power for use across the Company to power lights, ventilation and air conditioning, production machinery, office spaces, rehearsal rooms and the theatres.

Water – A 100,000 litre storage capacity rainwater harvesting system captures some 80% of the rainwater that falls on STC’s vast roof. It captures and provides non-potable water to all the artistic companies on Pier 4 and 5.

Waste – Implementation of comprehensive recycling systems front and back of house.

Green Design – A green design policy has assisted production teams reduce, reuse and recycle across productions. Supplier Guidelines assist designers consider ecological choices of their products and processes at the pre-design stage and throughout construction.
