Student feature: Angela Tran
Since 2016, St George Girls High School student Angela Tran has been a regular visitor at Sydney Theatre Company, first as a participant in Work Experience Week and then as one of the Young Wharfies, a year-long education program that brings high school students up close to STC productions and creatives.
Reflecting on her experience as a Work Experience student, Angela commented “Being a Work Experience participant was definitely one of the best experiences in my life because it gave me so much exposure to theatre and I was able to be personally involved in the many different [areas of the company], which was amazing.”
Angela then applied and was accepted into STC’s Young Wharfies program in 2017, a year-long program for Year 11 students who attend STC productions, workshops and masterclasses with STC creatives. This program has opened Angela’s eyes to the “incredibly versatile” career paths available in the Arts, commenting that “as a young adult (especially one looking at a career in the Arts), I found that Young Wharfies is a way to further my experience in the industry”.
Angela’s experience with STC’s student learning programs has reaffirmed her belief in theatre as “a platform for everyone to voice their opinions and share a story.” Angela is passionate about engaging young people in the Arts, a viewpoint that is reinforced by her experiences at STC. “I have honestly loved every moment of Young Wharfies! Every session is jam-packed with fun and thought-provoking questions,” said Angela.
