It's summer in Sarsaparilla, a sleepy outer suburb of Sydney.

Old Miss Docker is about to become homeless. Her lodgings are being sold and she hasn't anywhere to go. Into the breach steps the kind-hearted Mrs Custance and her husband, who offer to house Miss Docker on their glassed-in verandah in exchange for her help around the house.

Unfortunately, Miss Docker's help also involves her offering criticism on just about everything anyone does. Given this only brings disharmony and misery to the Custances, she is soon relocated to the Sundown Home for Old People, where she torments her fellow residents to the point of no longer being welcome.

She finds a final sanctuary at the local church. But, even there, Miss Docker insists on helping the local vicar with his sermons.
