It's summer in Sarsaparilla, a sleepy outer suburb of 1950s Sydney, and poor old Miss Docker is about to become homeless.

Into the breach step Mr and Mrs Custance, who offer Miss Docker a room in their house, determined to do a good deed for the woman who gives her time and advice to the community so generously.

Perhaps a little too generously. Miss Docker’s stay with the Custances falls short of harmonious, and the couple guiltily moves her on to Sundown Home for Old People, where her reputation precedes her.

As Miss Docker ploughs through Sarsparilla looking for somewhere to belong, it seems none of its inhabitants can escape her kindness. From the Custances and the nursing home, she makes for the church congregation, finally landing in the isolated grounds of the crematorium, where judgement is passed by an unlikely figure.
