In this strangely mesmerising two-minute timelapse video, watch the empty stage of Perth's Heath Ledger Theatre transform into the nineteenth-century newsroom of The Torrents, a period comedy set in a newspaper office of a fictional Australian gold mining town, Koolgalla, by Oriel Gray.
"The world of The Torrents is inspired by offices of the Victoran period, and based loosely on the office of the Western Argus Newspaper, published in Kalgoorlie between 1894 and 1938. The space is also heavily informed by Oriel Gray's detailed stage directions. Every box, window and desk are described in the script, even down to the dust of the office space."
— The Torrents set and costume designer Renée Mulder
Shot in 4K over two busy days, the footage shows the set take shape piece by piece, and come to life as each lighting state is experimented with, and then fixed. Soon, this co-production with Black Swan State Theatre Company will be packing up and heading for Sydney, to be put together once more within the Sydney Opera House Drama Theatre.
The Torrents, 18 Jul — 24 Aug 2019, Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House
