In an era of outrage, everyone seems to have a cause to protest whether they do that with some casual clicktivism or a full blown campaign of terror.

The Profit follows a group of four well intentioned, millennial activists as they stand up for their right to stand up. As these ambitious but hapless protesters escalate their campaign, they find that the desire to be heard and make an impact eclipses their interest in a message. If indeed there ever was a message. When a climactic event leaves the group without leadership, they’re thrown into chaos. Sure, their leader was flawed, but is the alternative any different? Is a change of leadership really a change?

The Profit takes a satirical look at the current political climate in Australia, our relationship to our political system, the choices we make about leadership and the difficulty of achieving structural change.

During the Rough Draft week, Melbourne playwright Angus Cameron will work in collaboration with STC Richard Wherrett Fellow Jessica Arthur to develop this new play. At the public showing, they invite you into their development process to see extracts of the work in progress. 
 

About the Artists

Writer Angus Cameron 

Angus completed a Masters of Writing for Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in 2015. His work has been seen at VCA, the Homer Festival, Melbourne Arts Centre, Small and Loud, the Melbourne Fringe Festival and the Adelaide Fringe Festival. His latest play, Human Error, produced by the Bakers Dozen, will be at the Melbourne Meat Market in June/July.

Director Jessica Arthur

Jessica Arthur is a theatre director and co-founder of the theatre company The Anchor. She is currently Sydney Theatre Company’s Richard Wherrett Fellow.

Some of Jessica’s recent directing credits include: Amongst Ruins (Snake Eggs Hatch) at the Old Fitz, INTOXICATION at the La Mama Courthouse and UNEND for Never Never Theatre Company at the Adelaide and Sydney Fringe Festivals. Jessica has also worked as Assistant Director at STC (Chimerica and Endgame) and Melbourne Theatre Company (Miss Julie).

About Rough Drafts

Rough Drafts is an opportunity to see fragments of a work in progress and to gain insight into the theatre making process.

Rough Drafts support the development of new Australian works by providing artists with an opportunity to experiment with and grow their ideas. Writers and directors are given access to a rehearsal space, a paid team of actors or creatives and dramaturgical support. They may use the week and resources to embark on something currently unscripted or they might choose to develop a script that is already complete in draft form. The outcomes vary greatly according to the project.

At the end of the workshop week, we invite you into the development process to have a sneak peak of a work in progress at the free public showing. These showings are an opportunity for the artists to try their ideas in front of an audience... and it’s a chance for you to learn about how new plays are made.
