ROUGH DRAFT #36
By Van Badham
“Some kind of reformed male pick-up artist has just offered me fifty thousand dollars if I teach him feminist seduction techniques in order to bang a librarian.”
Ish is a feminist academic who writes about computer games: “literally the most loathed and hated creature on the earth”, she quips. Destitute after losing a defamation law suit, she is dossing behind her office photocopier and surviving on care packages of carrots from her friends.
Guy is a self-styled master of seduction, but the gorgeous Danish librarian he has set his heart on is apparently impervious to his ‘game’. Desperate, he seeks the help of the woman he sued for defamation.
Will Guy’s feminist nemesis Ish be able to crack the psychology of the beautiful and enlightened Dane? And will Ish be willing to compromise her politics for a cool fifty grand?
Van Badham’s hilarious new comedy satirises the pop psychology of Pick Up Artists (PUA’s), who claim to understand the workings of the ‘female mind’. Banging Denmark shows us the workings of ‘the game’ from a female perspective and asks what the men who play it might really be searching for.
Content warning Contains strong language, sexual references and adult themes

About Rough Drafts
Rough Drafts is an opportunity to see fragments of a work in progress and to gain insight into the theatre making process.
Rough Drafts support the development of new Australian works by providing artists with an opportunity to experiment with and grow their ideas. Writers and directors are given access to a rehearsal space, a paid team of actors or creatives and dramaturgical support. They may use the week and resources to embark on something unscripted or they might choose to develop a script that is already complete in draft form. The outcomes vary greatly according to the project.
At the end of the workshop week, we invite you into the development process to have a sneak peek of a work in progress at the free public showing. These showings are an opportunity for the artists to try their ideas in front of an audience... and it’s a chance for you to learn about how new plays are made.
Rough Drafts are supported by The Girgensohn Foundation
