A NOTE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR KIP WILLIAMS

Here at STC, we are passionate about mounting theatre that is as varied and fabulous as the audiences we play to every night. This includes, of course, providing high quality, transportative theatre for the younger members of the Sydney community. We are also committed to producing the very best that Australian theatre has to offer. This is why I am so excited to be partnering with our friends at shake & stir theatre co to bring you Fantastic Mr Fox, an innovative and wickedly fun adaptation of one of the best loved children’s stories.
I think we all remember the first time we fell in love with theatre. I hope Fantastic Mr Fox and future family-friendly programming here at STC provides a similar sense of wonder, possibility and joy for the latest generation of Sydneysiders. I hope all the family enjoys the show.

Kip Williams, Artistic Director and Co-CEO
Director: Ross Balbuziente
I couldn’t tell you how many times I have read Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox over the years. Unashamedly, it remains one of my all-time favourite books, and will always be, however old I get.
The story has all the trademark grit, wit and grotesque deliciousness we have come to expect from the World’s #1 Storyteller, and it features three of Dahl’s most hilarious meanies. At the same time, the beating heart of the story is the importance of friendship and family and a reminder that, when we work together, anything can be accomplished.
This production first premiered in 2019 at the Playhouse QPAC in Brisbane. Since then, it has played to sold-out crowds on stages across the country including the Arts Centre Melbourne, Canberra Theatre Centre and the Heath Ledger Theatre (Perth). Despite the tremendous difficulties of the past few years and their impact on national touring, we are thrilled that our bushy hero has finally dug his way to the stunning Rosyln Packer Theatre.
Thank you to Artistic Director Kip, Producers Ben and Zoe, and the entire team at Sydney Theatre Company for inviting us to join your 2023 season of extraordinary theatre works – it has been a joy to share this shake & stir debut at STC with you.
Our goal was to create an epic theatre experience for young people (and those young at heart) – an energetic ensemble of actors interacting with full-stage animation on a huge multi-levelled set that houses a bag-full of theatrical tricks. It doesn’t hold back, and we can’t wait to now share it with Sydney audiences.
It is a passion for us at shake & stir to rework Dahl’s quintessential books into imaginative and spectacular theatre works of scale, for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. I’ve had the great delight of co-creating five original stage adaptations of his terrific titles, however Fantastic Mr Fox will always be extra-special.
We hope your family enjoys its time with our foxes, furry friends, and farmers as much as we have enjoyed creating this show for you.
It’s time to dig in.
