Group Devising Workshops
We offer workshops that cover all aspects of Group Devising. From establishing skills as a collaborator and performer, to developing scenes and character.
Designed for grades 7 – 12.
Drama Secondary (7 - 12)
In this workshop students will work with an STC Teaching Artist to develop their skills as actors and explore approaches to generating ideas for performance. Students will learn improvisation techniques and ways of creating narrative using elements of drama and dramatic conventions. Each group will present their devised ideas, receive feedback from their peers and direction from their Teaching Artist, to deepen their understanding and knowledge of theatre, from process to performance.
Senior (11 - 12)
In this workshop, students will focus on how to craft a performance with clear intention and meaning for an audience. The building blocks of character development will be explored in detail and students will learn how to develop and sustain character and place them into relationships and settings. By generating fragments/vignettes and turning these into a more connected structure, the students will then build on their performance by adding text and learn tools to help create dramatic coherence and clarity.
Monologue Workshop
Designed for both Junior and Senior students to refine their acting and script comprehension skills.
Junior & Senior
In this workshop students will learn acting techniques from an experienced STC Teaching Artist that will move through the process of voice and body warmups, interpreting a script for performance, character development and the importance of the actor/audience relationship. Students will explore the elements of drama to bring together dramatic action and meaning as well as different theatrical styles, form and theory to enhance originality in creating performances for the stage. Student actors will perform a section of their monologue in the workshop and receive direction and feedback from their Teaching Artist and peers.
First Nations Theatre Workshop
Junior & Senior
This workshop engages students with the powerful storytelling of First Nations Theatre practitioners specifically; 7 Stages of Grieving, The Visitors, and Stolen, examining how First Nations playwrights explore identity, kinship, culture, and historical contexts. Through performance-based activities, students will experiment with forms and style, exploring their use as in challenging audiences and evoking emotional responses. Aligned with the NSW Drama Syllabus for Stages 4 - 6, this workshop will foster performance skills, critical analysis, and a deeper appreciation of First Nations perspectives in Australian theatre.
Australian Contemporary Theatre: Fangirls Workshop
STC Education is offering a chance to bring HSC text, Fangirls, to life in this practical workshop. Focused on student understanding and experiential evidence, we will delve into the examination rubric through practical activities and explorations of key scenes from the production; all through student generated experience.
There isn't a better way to build an understanding of contemporary Australian theatre practice - which students can later reflect upon and write about.
Creative Writing Workshop
In this 90 minute interactive and dynamic workshop English students will generate ideas, learn how to respond to stimuli, create characters and develop a distinct voice in critical and creative ways. By drawing on drama techniques, coupled with a range of creative writing exercises, students will devise works in small groups and receive feedback on their composition skills and ability to respond to prescribed stimuli. These interactive workshops are designed for students to embody their learning and to build their confidence in creative writing. The workshops can be tailored to focus on certain aspects of the curriculum to strengthen students in producing imaginative, discursive and persuasive texts.
