In an exhilarating and historic moment for Sydney Theatre Company and Australian theatre at large, Kip Williams’ visionary adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray has today won two Tony Awards at a star-studded ceremony in New York City.

This is STC's very first win at the Tonys, following a nomination for another former-Artistic Director, Cate Blanchett, in 2017. The Picture of Dorian Gray now joins the exclusive group of Australian productions that have received the honour.

We offer our most joyful congratulations to the winners:

Marg Horwell - Best Costume Design of a Play

Sarah Snook - Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play

We also want to recognise the hundreds of creatives, technical and production crew, and STC staff who've worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that this wonderful production continued to delight audiences, in all its iterations.

We'd also to reiterate our congratulations to the team's Tony nominees:

Best Direction of a Play - Kip Williams

Best Scenic Design of a Play - Marg Horwell and David Bergman

Best Lighting Design of a Play - Nick Schlieper

Best Sound Design of a Play - Clemence Williams

These accomplishments make the Broadway season of The Picture of Dorian Gray the most nominated solo show in Tony history!

After several award-winning runs here in Australia and a glittering season at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End, The Picture of Dorian Gray played a wildly succesful run at The Music Box Theatre, Broadway in New York City!

Fresh from winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress in this very role, Australian icon Sarah Snook returned to perform all 26 characters in this historic and innovative adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s novel, adapted and directed by our previous Artistic Director Kip Williams, and presented in partnership with the Michael Cassel Group and their esteemed Broadway co-producers.

The production and its continued success represents the work, passion and creativity of hundreds of Australian artists, creatives and STC staff members. We’re so thrilled the world had a chance to witness Sarah Snook's breathtaking performance – it is nothing short of extraordinary.

Special thanks to Michael Cassel Group and partners for championing this groundbreaking Australian production.
