IS GOD IS

By Aleshea Harris
Co-Directed by Zindzi Okenyo and Shari Sebbens

Vengeance is theirs

Award-winning US playwright Aleshea Harris’ breakout hit, Is God Is, explodes onto the Wharf 1 stage for its Australian premiere production. A rollercoaster ride of thrills, kills and electric political thought, this play caused one New York Times critic to proclaim: “Step aside, Quentin Tarantino and Martin McDonagh.”

The recipient of the pre-eminent American Playwriting Foundation’s Relentless Award, Is God Is tells the vivid and violent story of twin sisters Racine and Anaia and their cross-country odyssey of revenge. They’re on a mission to track down their absent and abusive father to repay him for the brutality of their childhoods, and they’re not letting anyone get in their way.

In Harris’ own words, Is God Is takes its cues from “the ancient, the modern, the tragic, the Spaghetti Western, hip-hop and Afropunk”. With these tools she builds a moving and darkly comic depiction of the inheritance of trauma and spectacularly reclaims the trope of ‘the angry Black woman’ in a one-act, firecracker of a play.

Co-directed by Zindzi Okenyo and STC Resident Director Shari Sebbens, who wowed Darlinghurst Theatre Company audiences with seven methods of killing kylie jenner in 2021, Is God Is will star STC newcomers Henrietta Amevor and Masego Pitso, for a stylish, high-powered, utterly engrossing theatre experience that will have you balancing on the edge of your seat.
