Vale Martin McCallum

Sydney Theatre Company pays tribute to the late Martin McCallum. Martin was a Sydney Theatre Company Board Member (2005–2015), a valued member of the STC’s Chair’s Council since 2015 and a beloved theatre impresario. Martin dedicated his life to theatre, starting out as an actor, progressing through various roles in the theatre including stage manager and successful producer. He was a business partner to British theatrical producer Cameron Mackintosh. Over the course of his career, he worked on more than 500 shows on Broadway and the West End.

Through Martin’s work, he shaped the theatre industry. Productions that he produced include CatsSong and DanceLes MiserableMy Fair LadyOklahomaOliverThe Phantom of the OperaCarousel and Miss Saigon. Other stage show credits include Phillip Quast Live, at the DonmarEdward Scissorhands and Dirty Dancing.

Along with his stint at STC, Martin also shared his experience and expertise in governance roles in the performing arts sector including being Chair of the Donmar Warehouse (1996–2004), President of the London Society of Theatre (1999–2002).

Martin served as the inaugural Chair of the STC50 Building Committee which oversaw the masterplan development for the first major renovation of the Wharf since 1984. His enormous contribution has left an incredible legacy and impact on our Company. Through his work, guidance, and mentorship, he will continue to inspire future generations of theatre-lovers.
