STC’s Artistic Development team collaborate closely with talented artists like Angus Cerini over many years to develop and produce new works – plays that we believe are pioneering, will be in-demand with audiences, and will go on to have a life beyond STC.
Angus’s journey with STC began in 2007, winning the Patrick White Playwrights Award for Wretch, and continued in 2017 when the acclaimed The Bleeding Tree had a season at The Wharf. In 2020, STC premiered the haunting Wonnangatta, starring Hugo Weaving and Wayne Blair, the first STC show after COVID restrictions eased.

In 2021, Angus won the Patrick White Fellowship – a year-long residency at STC – where he continued to develop his relationship with STC’s Director of New Work and Artistic Development Paige Rattray. Out of this, the commission of Into the Shimmering World was born.

Bringing his journey full-circle, Angus recently met with the incoming Watershed Writers group to share the knowledge and experience he had gained from the start of his career to now.
Freelance artists need to have a sense of community and continuity: developing working relationships with collaborators who understand them, and with whom they feel comfortable working.
Being able to rely on consistent gifts from committed supporters enables us to work long-term with artists like Angus, allowing enough time and space for the extensive collaboration needed to bring exceptional ideas to the stage.
